Late Beginnings

I woke up today to watch the sun set.
It's most intense in the moments before it leaves;
in the moments before the hills smother it.
These hills around me, I would trade for nothing.
Every evening they take away, but give just the same
Their ebb and flow of celestial allowance keeps life exciting;
It is the reason to wake up.
There are two sides to this valley,
I sit on the side not yet in shadow.
I sit, looking oaks in the eyes.
The trees are like children, left alone in an unfamiliar place,
stretching towards the sun's rays in hopeless desperation,
waiting for day to return.
The sun sinks and my world, for a few moments, is grey.
With the night comes the cold.
and the shadows.
and the stars.
and the moon.
I am like the trees:
If I had only gone further,
the sun may not have left me so soon.
